LOS ADJETIVOS:
In Spanish, adjectives must MODIFY the subject. This means number and gender*. In other words, we must pay attention to whether our subject is singular or plural, masculine or feminine, when we decide to modify it.
*Both items AND people have "gender" in Spanish.
15
So, when we talk about "el libro"...
The article (el) tells us it is MASCULINE and SINGULAR
Any adjectives (and verbs) we use must then also be MASCULINE and SINGULAR:
El libro ROJO ES NUEVO.
16
FLANNY'S TIP
THE ARTICLE WILL NEVER STEER YOU WRONG!!
Whenever you are looking up a word in the dictionary, check to see if it is labeled as (m) or (f), and then look for the corresponding article. Sometimes words aren't what they seem!
EL sacapuntas
LA mano
LAS fotos (fotografías)
17
GENDER EQUALITY:
The spanish language is complicated when it comes to gender, but for people who identify outside of male or female, there are currently 3 options being used:
*Note - these are optional for those who choose to use them. You will not be tested on them.
18
GENDER OPTIONS FOR PEOPLE (again, items still have gender, that does not change):
Putting an X at the end of the adjective - Latinx.
Using an E at the end of the adjective - Latine.
Using the arroba (@) symbol - Latin@ (for written Spanish)
The historical A and O are, of course, still used. Latino, Latina
