Defining and Describing Recycling

  • Human Recycling: Process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.

  • Natural Recycling: Process of taking matter and atoms of all types and reusing them or converting them into something different.

3

Recycling as a System

  • A system is a series of interconnected parts that work together to accomplish a task or series of tasks.

  • Some systems can be influenced by the environment.

  • If one part of the system fails, the whole system may fall apart or not work properly

4

Open or Closed-Loop

How much interaction between matter in and out and energy in and out determines if a system is open or closed.

The Hydrologic Cycle

  • Closed system because water is neither created nor destroyed on a large scale.

  • Water exists as solid, liquid and gas phases that are interchangeable at temperatures found on earth.

  • There is an exchange of energy between the water cycle and the environment, but no exchange of matter outside the water cycle.
