Recycling Unit Part 1 Test Review
2
Defining and Describing Recycling
Human Recycling: Process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.
Natural Recycling: Process of taking matter and atoms of all types and reusing them or converting them into something different.
3
Recycling as a System
A system is a series of interconnected parts that work together to accomplish a task or series of tasks.
Some systems can be influenced by the environment.
If one part of the system fails, the whole system may fall apart or not work properly
4
Open or Closed-Loop
How much interaction between matter in and out and energy in and out determines if a system is open or closed.
5
The Hydrologic Cycle
Closed system because water is neither created nor destroyed on a large scale.
Water exists as solid, liquid and gas phases that are interchangeable at temperatures found on earth.
There is an exchange of energy between the water cycle and the environment, but no exchange of matter outside the water cycle.
