The Passive

Usage: To put the focus on action , rather than who did the action .

It formed : be( any tense) + V3 past participle.

The crime was committed early in the morning.

To include who did the action , use ( by)

The burglar was arrested by the police

Notes: Newspapers often use the passive to report crime stories.

We use the past perfect to talk about an activity or event that was completed before another activity or event in the past.

The criminal had already escaped by the time the police arrived.

Past perfect progressive when the activity was in progress at the time another activity happened in the past

The driver had been driving between Makkah and Jeddah when the police stopped him.

form: Had + been+ v+ing
