Abraham and Sarah's trip

  • Left Ur

  • moved to Terah in the north (about 700 miles)

  • many years later traveled south to Canaan

  • Due to a famine they continued into Egypt

  • After offending the king, Abraham and Sarah were exiled from Egypt, they returned to Canaan

  • Eventually settled on the mountain near Mamre

  • In time Lot moved to the plain near Sodom (not a good choice)

4

God's Covenant with Abraham

  • A covenant is a sacred promise with God and a person/people

  • God promised Abraham he would be the "Father of many nations".

  • To be the "Father of many nations" one would need children (Abraham and Sarah were barren).

  • Promise of descendants; numerous as the stars or the sands on a beach

  • Promised Land (many descendants need a place to live); Canaan which later became Israel

Who was Lot?

Lot was a nephew of Abraham. He was going to inherit everything from Abraham, since he and Sarah had no children.

Lot had a many flocks. There was not enough pasture space for all the sheep and cattle owned by him and his uncle. Lot was given the choice to stay on the mountain near Mamre or move to the plain near Sodom. Sodom was a violent and dangerous city. During one war, Lot was captured. Abraham took over 300 of his men and attacked the camp that held Lot, rescuing him.

Abraham hoped Lot would return to the land closer to him and Sarah. Lot returned to Sodom. Not a good idea...
