Governing Egypt
The first ruler united Egypt conquest.
To keep Egypt united he needed more than military power, he needed to convince "persuade" the Egyptian people to accept his authority.
Authority: a person with authority has the right to control people.

The God King
Pharaohs: rulers of Egypt.
Egyptians believed that Gods controlled everything
B/c Pharoah controlled Egypt, people naturally saw him or her as god king.
They believed that after death a pharoah would join god, and thus filled their tombs with items they might need.

Good Government
The 2nd way that Pharaohs gained authority from the people was by providing a good government.
Responsibilities :
protect his ppl
welfare
lead religious rituals
Priests and officials carried out the orders, collecting taxes and enforcing laws.

The Egyptian Social Order

Top: Pharaoh
Next: Nobles, Priests, and officials
Mid: Scribes
Next: Merchants, and Artisans
Lowest: Farmers, servants, peasants, slaves.
Artisans are skilled workers who practice a trade or handicraft.

Two Pharaohs in Power
The 2 most famous are Queen Hatshepsut and Ramses II
The Queen- King : Hatshepsut, was the daughter of one pharaoh and the great wife of Thutmose II (died in 1504 b.c ) - which is when she took rule instead
To gain support she carried out all the rituals like a king.
Next she went on to send traders by sea to East Africa, to Punt, where they returned with wood, ivory, gold, and perfumes.
interesting fact: at some point in history her name was chipped out of carvings and her statues were smashed.

The Warrior King
Ramses II ruled 200 years after Queen King Hatshepsut
He spent the first half of his rule at war, fighting.
Although he lost many of his soldiers to the Hittites in the Battle of Qadesh, he had victory at Qadesh, present day Syria.
