G12: Isomers, Hydrocarbons, and Carbon Rings
Objectives:
- explain isomers and hydrocarbons
- describe the relationship between hydrocarbons and boiling point
-describe carbon rings (describe and draw example) from chapter 1/section 1

2
STARTER ACTIVITY: READ
Even though you likely see gasoline-powered vehicles everyday, you rarely see what gasoline itself looks like! To the eye, gasoline is a pretty uninteresting yellowish-brown liquid. At the molecular level, gasoline is actually made up of a range of different molecules, most of them hydrocarbons (molecules containing only hydrogen and carbon atoms).
The molecular geometries of hydrocarbons are directly related to the physical and chemical properties of these molecules. Molecules that have the same molecular formula but different molecular geometries are called isomers. There are two major classes of isomers: structural-isomers and stereo-isomers.

HYDROCARBONS AND BOILING POINT
As the chain length (numbers of carbons) increases, the melting and boiling points increase in hydrocarbon compounds. The reason that longer carbon-chain molecules have higher boiling points is that longer chain molecules can become wrapped around each other like strands of spaghetti, making them more resistant to effects of heat.
12
Multiple Choice
Which best explains the relationship between hydrocarbons and boiling point?
the number of carbons decrease (lower) the boiling point
boiling point does not affect hydrocarbons
boiling point of hydrocarbons increase when the number of carbons increase
melting point and boiling point stay the same
13
CARBON RINGS
Introduction to Rings:
Many organic compounds contain rings of carbon atoms. The simplest ring compound contains 3 carbons as in cyclopropane. The most common ring compounds contain either 5 or 6 carbons.
