The War Begins

  • The British had very little respect for the American Indians as warriors

  • George Washington advised the British to take the Indians more seriously

  • His advice was not listened to

The French and Indian War

  • The British and the French, who fought alongside the Indians, began fighting over the Ohio Valley

  • Early on, the British and Colonial armies were dealt a huge blow at Fort Duquense

  • Many people were killed at this battle

  • George Washington gathered the survivors and struggled back to safety

  • The British continued to lose several more battles with the French

  • The Colonists saw this and began to lose faith in the British army

  • Many of them wanted to fight their own war, without the British giving them orders

  • Many colonists were beginning to start thinking about independence from Britain

  • King George II knew that France might win the war

  • If this happened, France would claim all the land up until the Mississippi River

  • He needed to make some changes

  • A man named William Pitt was brought in as Prime Minister and Secretary of State of Great Britain

William Pitt

  • Pitt offered words of encouragement to the colonists

  • He sent many supplies and troops to the colonists

  • Together, they formed an army of 50,000 soldiers

  • This was more than all of the French soldiers who were in the new world

  • The colonists began to regain confidence in the British, and were prepared to win the war for them
