Mixed Numbers/Improper Fractions

  • Mixed Number - A whole number and a fraction combined to represent one number -- Example:

     112      5 23       10 351\frac{1}{2}\ \ \ \ \ \ 5\ \frac{2}{3}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ 10\ \frac{3}{5}

  • Improper Fraction- A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator -- Example: 32         53        107       982         44\frac{3}{2}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \frac{5}{3}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \frac{10}{7}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \frac{98}{2}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \frac{4}{4}

3

You can move between mixed numbers and improper fractions interchangeably

  • To change from a mixed number to an improper fraction Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Then add the numerator to the product.  That becomes your new numerator. Denominator stays the same

  •  4 23 > (4 x 3) + 2 = 1434\ \frac{2}{3}\ ->\ \left(4\ x\ 3\right)\ +\ 2\ =\ \frac{14}{3}

4

You can move between mixed numbers and improper fractions interchangeably

  • To change from an improper fraction to a mixed number, Divide the numerator by the denominator.  Whole number is how many times it fits in, the remainder becomes your new numerator and the denominator stays the same.

  •   143> 14 ÷3 = 4 with 2 left over.  > 4 23\ \frac{14}{3}->\ 14\ \div3\ =\ 4\ with\ 2\ left\ over.\ \ ->\ 4\ \frac{2}{3}
