2
Time for a Hook video on digestion
Teacher will play the video on digestion
3
Time for quick lab observation on digestion
materials needed : zip lock bag, orange juice, stocking, a bowl, 2 paper or plastic cups, crackers and water
stockings and cups will represent the intestines
Prediction/Hypothesis 1: The cup represents the big intestine, and the stocking the small intestine
Prediction/Hypothesis 2 : the stocking would best represent the small intestine and the cups would best represent the big intestine
TIME TO WATCH THE LAB OBSERVATION
4
Multiple Choice
which prediction or Hypothesis is more accurate?
Prediction 1
prediction 2
5
Digestion and excretion
-living things need to eat , and use energy from food.
-plants make their own food through photosynthesis
-most organisms have a way of ingesting or eating their food, and some absorb food from the environment
-a cow gets energy by eating grass, humans may eat bread and some animals absorbs their food for energy
6
ingestion and digestion
digestion is the first step to releasing the foods stored energy after ingestion.
-digestion is the process where food is broken down into absorbable molecules that can be used throughout the body.
-excretion is the removal of waste from the body, it has no value and can be toxic to cells and tissues
7
Multiple Select
choose the correct boxes
we need food for energy
excretion and digestion are the same
excretion is the removal of waste from the body, it has no value and can be toxic to cells and tissues
most organisms have a way of ingesting or eating their food, and some absorb food from the environment
8
comparing digestive systems
-Invertebrates have several ways to digest and excrete
-sponges are filter feeders, the food gets strained in their pores from the water
-cnidarians and flatworms food enters and leaves from the same opening special cells digest and distribute nutrients, unused material is the released. more advanced invertebrates have two tubes 1 for ingestion and 1 for excretion(earth worm)
9
Video time
Digestion in earth worms
10
vertebrates digestion
-animals have more complex digestive systems. They have many different digestive structures to handle their diet, eg plant eaters grind their food with their teeth and have bacteria in the gut that digests the plant tissue. Human digestion begins in the mouth, stomach, small intestine Nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine and moved into the blood. solid waste is the sent out the body kidneys, lungs skin and liver help get rid of waste
11
Multiple Select
select the correct boxes
animals have more complex digestive systems.
more advanced invertebrates have two tubes 1 for ingestion and 1 for excretion(earth worm)
Human digestion begins in the stomach
sponges are filter feeders, the food gets strained in their pores from the water
Nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine and moved into the blood
12
respiration
respiration is process of releasing energy from food molecules
all organisms undergo respiration to release energy from food
respiration is also referred to as breathing, breathing provides oxygen to unlock the energy in food, exhaling rids the body of waste produced during cellular respiration CO2 and H2O is produced
lungs are the organism of the respiratory system
13
Respiration
-soft bodied invertebrates used diffusion for respiration diffusion is a simple gas exchange , from High concentration pressure to low pressure for oxygen to diffuse, the surface need to be moist, worms, snails and slugs tend to stay in moist places-larger organisms need a more complex system that achieves the same result-mollusks, crustaceans and some worms have feathery structures . close to the surface, gas exchange happens here.-book lungs are plate structures stacked, insects and spider have branches called tracheas a network to reach oxygen rich air
14
Multiple Select
select the correct boxes
respiration is process of releasing energy from food molecules
respiration happens at night only
respiration is also referred to as breathing, breathing provides oxygen to unlock the energy in food, exhaling rids the body of waste produced during cellular respiration CO2 and H2O is produced
soft bodied invertebrates used diffusion for respiration diffusion is a simple gas exchange

verterbrates
amphibian means both, t live in water when young and land as adults.Young Amphibeans exchange gases through their skin & gills.Adults use th lungs and skin.
3 vertebrate classes use lungs, reptiles, birds and mammals .In humans air enters the nose & mouth, passes into the pharynx then larynx and trachea. Air moves into branched bronchi, bronchioles branch from bronchi, gas exchange happens in tiny air saces called alveoli. Diaphragm contracts and expands to control breathing
17
Multiple Choice
select the correct box
Diaphragm contracts and expands to control breathing
diaphragm deflates always
18
Multiple Select
select the correct boxes
3 vertebrate classes use lungs, reptiles, birds and mammals
Young Amphibeans exchange gases through their skin & gills.Adults use th lungs and skin.
we breath in CO2 and exhale O2 as humans
In humans air enters the nose & mouth first
