Comparing Values

  • A number line can be used to compare and order integers

  • Numbers to the left are less than numbers to the right

  • 2 <5 (2 is to the left of 5 on the number line)

  •  1 <4-1\ <\left|4\right|  (-1 is to the left of 4 on the number line)

Adding integers with different signs

  • Subtract the lesser value from the greater value. Then use the sign of the integer with the greater value.

  • 8+ (-10)= 10-8= 2… Which integer is larger? 10-> so we use the negative sign. The answer is -2

  • (-13)+17= 17-13= 4.. Which integer is larger? 17-> so we use the positive sign. The answer is 4
