Simple Past vs Past Continuous

We use the SIMPLE PAST for an action that happened at a particular moment in the past. We often use WHEN with this tense.


We use PAST CONTINUOUS for a background action or situation in the past. We often use WHILE with this tense.

Second Conditional

We use the second conditional to talk about the consequences of an unreal present action or an improbable future action.


It's divided in:

Condition clause: if + simple past

Result clause: would/wouldn't + verb in the base form


Ex: If I studied hard, I would pass in the test.

Second Conditional: Simple Past!

RULES (REGULAR VERBS)

1) We usually add -ed to the verb. (ex: start - started)


2) If the verb ends in -e, we add -d. (ex: use - used)


3) If a short verb ends in consonant + vowel + consonant, we double the final consonant and -ed. (ex: plan - planned)


4) We add -ed to verbs ending in vowel + -y. (ex: play - played)


5) If the verb ends in consonant + -y, we change the -y to -i and add -ed. (ex: try - tried)
