From your previous lesson, you have learned about simplifying fractions. Simplifying fractions is sometimes called reducing fractions to its lowest terms. The fraction is in its simplest form when the GCF of the numerator and denominator is 1. Let us simplify these fractions:

3

  •  810 = 45\frac{8}{10}\ =\ \frac{4}{5}  The GCF of 8 and 10 is 2, so  810 ÷ 22 = 45\frac{8}{10}\ \div\ \frac{2}{2}\ =\ \frac{4}{5}

  •  113 = 3 23\frac{11}{3}\ =\ 3\ \frac{2}{3}  Change an improper fraction to a mixed number. 11  ÷\div  3  ==  3 with a remainder of 2

  •  3030 = 1\frac{30}{30}\ =\ 1

  •  5 26 = 5 2÷26÷2 = 5 135\ \frac{2}{6}\ =\ 5\ \frac{2\div2}{6\div2}\ =\ 5\ \frac{1}{3}   Simplify the fractional part of the mixed number

4

  •  9 33 = 9+1=10 because 33 =19\ \frac{3}{3}\ =\ 9+1=10\ because\ \frac{3}{3}\ =1

  •  2436=2436÷1212=23 GCF of 24 and 36 is 12.\frac{24}{36}=\frac{24}{36}\div\frac{12}{12}=\frac{2}{3}\ GCF\ of\ 24\ and\ 36\ is\ 12.

  •  12 159=? GCF of 15 and 9 is 3. 159÷33=53=1 23 12\ \frac{15}{9}=?\ GCF\ of\ 15\ and\ 9\ is\ 3.\ \frac{15}{9}\div\frac{3}{3}=\frac{5}{3}=1\ \frac{2}{3}\

     12+1 23 = 13 2312+1\ \frac{2}{3}\ =\ 13\ \frac{2}{3}
