In this lesson, you will

  • Take a quiz with two multiple choice questions and one essay

3

Add 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers first!

Let's say your friend has 125 dots on his/her bed, and your bed has 543 dots. How do you figure out how many dots there are in all? First, set up the problem like this:

 125+543=?125+543=?
Then, add the hundreds place.  100+500=600100+500=600  , so the hundredths place is a "6."
Next, add the tens place.  20+40=6020+40=60  , so the tens place is a "6" as well.
Last, add the ones place.  5+3=85+3=8  , so the ones place is an "8." Now that we know the hundreds, tens, and ones place, we combine the three numbers.  600+60+8=668600+60+8=668  , so the answer to 125 plus 543 is 668.
