Add 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers first!

Let's say your friend has 125 dots on his/her bed, and your bed has 543 dots. How do you figure out how many dots there are in all? First, set up the problem like this:

 $125+543=?$  
Then, add the hundreds place.  $100+500=600$  , so the hundredths place is a "6."
Next, add the tens place.  $20+40=60$  , so the tens place is a "6" as well.
Last, add the ones place.  $5+3=8$  , so the ones place is an "8." Now that we know the hundreds, tens, and ones place, we combine the three numbers.  $600+60+8=668$  , so the answer to 125 plus 543 is 668.
