Speed, Velocity, & Acceleration
How are they different?
19
Learning Objective
Know what speed, velocity, and acceleration are. Understand how they are different. Be able to calculate speed, distance, time, and acceleration
20
Speed
Speed is the measure how quickly distance changes with time.
Constant Speed: distance traveled in a unit of time stays the same
Changing Speed: when and object moves a greater or less distance in the same amount of time
Average Speed: total distance traveled divided by the total time
Average speed = total distance / total time
21
22
23
Using Equations to Solve for Speed, Distance, & Time
Distance = speed x time
Time = distance / speed
Speed = distance / time
24
Multiple Choice
Find the speed of Ms. Calvo after 40 sec at 8 meters.
5 m/s
8 m/s
5 mph
0.2 m/s
25
Multiple Choice
The average speed on the highway is 60mph and it is 30 miles from Miami Beach to Kendall. How long will it take to get to Miami Beach if I leave at 4pm?
5 min
30 min
5 hr
30 sec
26
Velocity
Velocity of an object is its speed combined with the direction of the motion.
Just add the direction to the speed and you have velocity
An example of velocity would be 70mph south
27
28
Multiple Select
Check the correct examples of velocity
60 km/hr
20 mph East
30 m/s up
2.7 mph
45 km/her South
29
Changing Velocity
Changes in speed or direction of an object in motion.
30
31
Multiple Choice
How is velocity different than speed?
Speed opposes velocity
Velocity is speed with a direction
None of the answers are correct
32
33
34
Acceleration
Acceleration is a measure how quickly velocity changes.
Acceleration describes the change in velocity over time.
35
Acceleration
Can be negative (deacceleration or slowing down)
Goes in opposite direction of velocity
Can be positive (speeding up)
Goes in same direction of velocity

True
False
38
Multiple Choice
Why does a car accelerate as it round a corner at a constant speed?
Its direction changes
It doesn't
It slows down
Its speeds up
39
