Weathering

  • The breaking down of Earth's surface-

can be caused by different things:

  • Ice

  • root wedging

  • flowing water

  • abrasion- rocks bumping and hitting each other

  • wind

  • weather

Multiple Choice

What is physical weathering?

1

The process by which earth’s surface is broken down into smaller pieces.

2

After pieces of the Earth are carried by erosion they are deposited somewhere else. Deposition means to deposit things somewhere else.

3

A five-thousand-foot-deep canyon located in Arizona. It was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years and is one of the best examples of weathering and erosion.

4

Which one of these is an example of physical weathering?

5

Erosion is:

After pieces of the Earth are broken down through weathering, those pieces are moved through erosion. It’s the process of moving things from one place to another.

9

Multiple Choice

What is deposition?

1

An extremely cold liquid made from nitrogen gas being squeezed (compressed) really hard. It is -321 degrees Celsius (-196 degrees Fahrenheit) and is used to freeze things very quickly.

 Chemical Weathering

Investigation 1.3-Materials

  • 1 FOSS tray

    4 self-stick notes

    1 limestone sample

    1 sandstone sample

    1 marble sample

    1 basalt sample

  • 4 vials

    1 syringe

    1 cup of vinegar

    4 pairs of safety goggles

15

Procedure

    1. Write the name of one rock on both sides of a self-stick note and place the note in one of the tray compartments.

  • 2.Place each rock sample on top of its label.

  • 3.Observe the rocks. Draw and describe your samples.

Which rock samples reacted? The ones with water or the ones with vinegar?

18

Write down your observations for each rock in your notebooks.

What do you think the bubbles mean?

21

What do the bubbles mean? (Write this down)

  • Bubbles indicate a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction is a process in which two or more materials mix in a way that forms new materials. In this case, the limestone reacted with the acid rain and created a gas. Continuous streaming of lots of bubbles is evidence that a gas is being produced as a result of a chemical reaction.

22

Reaction with Vinegar?

How can we find out if a chemical reaction has occurred, creating a new material that has dissolved in the clear liquid?
