Things to remember

  • The value of a number is the amount

  • For example, the value of the 2 in 213 is "200"

  • The place value os a number is the place it is in

  • For example, the place value of the 2 in 213 is the hundreds place

11

Things to remember

  • As the same number goes to the left, it gets 10 times bigger.

  • For example, a 4 in the hundreds place is 10 times bigger than a 4 in the tens place. (See 1 slide back)

  • As the same number goes to the right, it gets 10 times smaller. This means it s one-tenth of it or divided by 10.

  • For example, a 4 in the tens place is one-tenth of a 4 in the hundreds place (See 1 slide back)

12

Multiple Choice

A 5 in the thousands place is 10 times greater than a 5 in the...

1

hundreds place

2

ten-thousands place

13

Quick reminder...

  • When you see a problem like this:

  • 5 hundreds x 10= ___ _______ = ____ ______

  • You first figure out your multiplication. So 5x10=50 and then you put the same unit in the blank

  • 5 hundreds x 10= 50 hundreds = ____ ______

  • Now think, what is 50 hundreds equal to... 5 thousands!

  • So the correct answer is...

  • 5 hundreds x 10= 50 hundreds = 5 thousands

Quick reminder...

  • When you see a problem like this:

  •  7 hundreds÷10=7\ hundreds\div10=  ___ hundreds

  • You first figure out your division. Well, I can' divide 7 into 10 peices so I rewrite it

  •  7 hundreds÷107\ hundreds\div10  is the same as  700÷10700\div10

  • I can simplify  700÷10700\div10  and solve  70÷170\div1   instead by crossing out common zeros (zero trick)

  •  70÷1=7070\div1=70  which is 7 tens

  • So, that means  7 hundreds÷10=7 tens7\ hundreds\div10=7\ tens

The next slides are about different forms of numbers

There are 2 picture with text, several pages of text, and several questions. Read carefully.

20

There are 3 forms of numbers we have learned about

  • Standard form

  • Expanded form

  • Word form

Slide image

21

Standard Form

  • Standard from the the normal way to write numbers

  • 132,192 is an example of a number written in standard form

  • A tricky part is commas

  • Remember: they go in groups of 3

  • See the picture to the right? It shows commas separating groups of 3

22

Multiple Choice

Select the correct standard form of this number: seven hundred twenty-one thousand, two hundred eleven

1

700,21,200,11

2

72,1211

3

721,211

4

700,000+20,000+1,000+200+10+1

23

Expanded form

  • Expanded form is another way to write a number

  • It stretches the number out by seperating the number into it's values

  • For example, the number 7,193 in expanded form is:

  • 7,000 + 100 + 90 + 3

  • Don't forget your commas and plus signs

27

Word form

  • Word form in another way to write a number

  • You spell it out exactly as you read the number

  • NO numbers at all

  • For example, 1,234,567 is written as:

  • one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven

  • Make sure you have commas and dashes

  • Dashes go in between a ten and a one. It connects "best friends" like twenty-three or seventy-six
