I CAN COMPARE FRACTIONS USING > , < , or =

Part 1: Comparing fractions to 1/2

3

When comparing fractions to 1/2...

  • Look at the denominator (If the numerator is less than half of the denominator, then the fraction is less than one-half. If the numerator is greater than half of the denominator, then the fraction is greater than one-half.)

  • Use fractions that are equivalent to one-half (If you’re trying to determine if 4/6 is greater than 1/2, find a fraction with the same denominator and that is also equivalent to 1/2. In this case, 3/6. Since 4/6 is greater than 3/6, then 4/6 is also greater than 1/2.)

Part 2: Comparing Fractions with the same denominator.

8

When comparing fractions with the same denominator...

  • If the denominators are the same, then the fraction with the greater numerator is the greater fraction. The fraction with the lesser numerator is the lesser fraction. And, if the numerators are equal, the fractions are equivalent.

When comparing fractions with the same numerator...

  • all you have to do is compare the denominators. The fraction with the bigger denominator is smaller.

Part 4: Mixed Pratice

19

When comparing fractions...

  • you don't always have the same numerator, same denominator, or compare to a 1/2.

  • This is when visual representations REALLY HELP you understand the size of a fraction.

20

Types of Fractional Representations:

  • Number lines

  • Fraction circles

  • Fraction strips

  • Fraction rectangles

Poll

How do you feel about comparing fractions?

Really good! I think I can teach someone else how to compare fractions using different types of visual representations.

Good. I can do compare fractions with visual representations, but I don't think I can teach someone, yet.

Okay. I might still need some help from time to time to help me understand how big fractions are compared to another fraction.

Not good. I am not even sure what I am doing most of time. I need a lot of help.
