There are 88 official constellations.

The first constellation I learned about was the big dipper. Here in Vegas, one of my favorite is Orion because it is one of the easiest to identify.

What was the first constellation you learned about or what is your favorite constellation?

Discussion Posts

"In some questions that I am wrong in the quiz I want to know the answers . . . or why sometimes I have a good one but it comes out wrong"

~ Always double check your spelling and your tense/plurality (i.e. is it took, take, taken, etc)

~ If unsure, ask in discussion board and I will let you know

"I had a similar question. I typed ecliptic in question 25, i'm not sure if I'm genuinely wrong or if the quiz just doesn't understand the spelling"

~ The question says: 'Zodiac stars are all along the ecliptic plane, which is the only place that ____ can occur.' The answer is 'eclipses' because that is where the word ecliptic comes from.

Star Lifecycles

Birth - Nuclear fusion starts

Main sequence - reliable Hydrogen to Helium fusion (but any color or size)

Old Age - Red giant, red supergiant, blue giant, blue supergiant

Death - Stellar ejection (gas just escapes star); supernova (explosive release of gas)

Corpse - white dwarf, neutron star, black hole

Lifecycle Chart

Stages depend on size of the nebula that formed the star

Not all stars go through all stages

Larger masses go through more stages and more dramatic ends

HR Diagrams

Hertzsprung-Russel Diagram

HR Diagram

Compares temperature to light released

Can chart the life cycles of different stars

Temperature scale is BACKWARDS

Do you have any questions about stars?

- Do you understand the differences between types of stars?

- Do you know what determines the type of star?

- Do you know how to tell what stages a star goes through?

- Do you know how to read an HR Diagram?

18

Canvas Assignment

We are going to go over some of the information in your canvas assignment. Please go to canvas and start the canvas quiz.

19

Missing pieces

Not all types of stars are shown on an HR Diagram:

  • supernova
  • black hole
  • neutron star
  • nebula

These types of stars are literally "off the chart" because their temperature/luminosity values are too high or too low
