Star Types

Open Ended
There are 88 official constellations.
The first constellation I learned about was the big dipper. Here in Vegas, one of my favorite is Orion because it is one of the easiest to identify.
What was the first constellation you learned about or what is your favorite constellation?

Discussion Posts
"In some questions that I am wrong in the quiz I want to know the answers . . . or why sometimes I have a good one but it comes out wrong"
~ Always double check your spelling and your tense/plurality (i.e. is it took, take, taken, etc)
~ If unsure, ask in discussion board and I will let you know
"I had a similar question. I typed ecliptic in question 25, i'm not sure if I'm genuinely wrong or if the quiz just doesn't understand the spelling"
~ The question says: 'Zodiac stars are all along the ecliptic plane, which is the only place that ____ can occur.' The answer is 'eclipses' because that is where the word ecliptic comes from.

Multiple Choice
What determines the type of star a nebula will become?
its size
its color
its mass
its density
5
Multiple Choice
What type of star is the coldest?
red giant
brown dwarf
main sequence
white dwarf
blue giant
6
Multiple Choice
What is the name for stars that are stable and performing hydrogen to helium nuclear fusion?
main sequence
white dwarf
red giant
neutron star
7
Multiple Choice
What type of star is the largest?
red giant
blue giant
neutron star
black hole
white dwarf
8
Multiple Choice
What type of star is our sun?
white dwarf
red giant
main sequence
neutron star
blue giant
9
Multiple Choice
What type of star is the most dense?
neutron star
blue giant
black hole
main sequence
white dwarf
10
Multiple Choice
What type of star will be left behind when the sun runs out of energy?
white dwarf
neutron star
black hole
supernova
red giant
11
Multiple Choice
Will an older star have more or less layers than a newer star?
more
less
the same
12
Multiple Choice
An h-r diagram compares a star's temperature to what other property?
color
luminosity
size
brightness
13
Multiple Choice
What is the dependent variable of an H-R diagram?
luminosity
brightness
temperature
color
size
14
Star Lifecycles
Birth - Nuclear fusion starts
Main sequence - reliable Hydrogen to Helium fusion (but any color or size)
Old Age - Red giant, red supergiant, blue giant, blue supergiant
Death - Stellar ejection (gas just escapes star); supernova (explosive release of gas)
Corpse - white dwarf, neutron star, black hole
15
Lifecycle Chart
Stages depend on size of the nebula that formed the star
Not all stars go through all stages
Larger masses go through more stages and more dramatic ends
16
HR Diagrams
Hertzsprung-Russel Diagram
HR Diagram
Compares temperature to light released
Can chart the life cycles of different stars
Temperature scale is BACKWARDS

Do you have any questions about stars?
- Do you understand the differences between types of stars?
- Do you know what determines the type of star?
- Do you know how to tell what stages a star goes through?
- Do you know how to read an HR Diagram?

Canvas Assignment
We are going to go over some of the information in your canvas assignment. Please go to canvas and start the canvas quiz.
19
Missing pieces
Not all types of stars are shown on an HR Diagram:
- supernova
- black hole
- neutron star
- nebula
These types of stars are literally "off the chart" because their temperature/luminosity values are too high or too low

22
Multiple Choice
Which part of the HR diagram shows hot stars?

23
Multiple Choice
Is a supernova more or less bright than a normal star?
more bright
less bright
24
Multiple Choice
Which part of the HR diagram shows bright stars?
Left

Star Lifecycles
Figure out the mass
All stars start as a nebula
Follow the steps of the lifecycle
28
29

30
Sun
Sun is a medium/intermediate star
All stars start as a nebula
All stars go to the main sequence
