  • Imperialism is economic and political domination by a stonger country over a weaker country.

Why would the US want to be imperialistic?

The US wanted to expand their borders in order to move into new markets, to spread democracy, and to have superiority over other countries.

Expansionism is the idea behind expanding a countries borders and gaining more land.

What is a difference between Imperialism and Expansionism?

  • While both of these ideas end with the aquistion of new land, they are not always one in the same.

  • Expansionism is merely the idea of expanding a physical border. While Imperailism is the idea of conquering and ruling over other countries and nations.

What is Yellow Journalism?

It is NOT just a yellow newspaper... It is the exaggeration of news by journalists in order to gain readers and/or sway the opinon of others to fit an agenda. Two of the most influential yellow journalists were William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. They can be seen in this political cartoon.

Acquistion in regards to history is the gaining of land. By any means. We "acquired" Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines after the Spanish-American War.

When a country declares that a piece of land outside of it's borders is now apart of the nation. Often done after military occupation and whether the people living there want it or not. We annexed Hawaii and made it the 50th state of our country.

A state of country that is controlled or "protected" by another country. Cuba was a protectorate of the US until it gained it's independence. Guam and Puerto Rico are still protectorates today.

foreign policy declaration by U.S. Pres. Theodore Roosevelt in 1904–05 stating that, in cases of flagrant and chronic wrongdoing by a Latin American country, the United States could intervene in that country’s internal affairs. It was essentially an addition to the Monroe Doctrine which stated that the western hemisphere was closed to new colonization.

It is an artifical waterway built by man that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean in Panama. This cut travel times nearly in half. Ships no longer had to go around South America's tip to cross the world.
