Gli aggettivi e alcuni avverbi possono assumere forme diverse per esprimere un grado più alto o il grado più alto di una caratteristica. In questo modo è possibile confrontare gli esseri viventi o le cose. 

Ci sono tre livelli di confronto o di aumento: 1. Positiv

• Positiv = Forma di base dell'aggettivo e descrive una proprietà

• z. B. klein

• Der Hund ist klein.

Ci sono tre livelli di confronto o di aumento: 2. Komparativ

• Komparativ = confronta gli esseri viventi o le cose in termini di questa caratteristica. Esprime che qualcuno o qualcosa possiede una qualità superiore

• z. B. kleiner

• Mein Hund ist kleiner.

Ci sono tre livelli di confronto o di aumento: 3. Superlativ

• Superlativ = esprime che qualcuno o qualcosa possiede il più alto grado di qualità

• z. B. am kleinsten

• Der Hund von Peter ist am kleinsten.

Forme regolari di aumento

• Positiv: forma di base (z.B. klein)

• Kompatariv: Adjektiv + -er (z.B. kleiner)

• Superlativ: Adjektiv: am + Adjektiv + -stein (z.B. am kleinsten)

• Un (e) serve come aiuto alla pronuncia per gli aggettivi che terminano con -d, -ß, -sch, -t, -tz, -x o -z.

• z.B. hübsch (carino), hübscher, am hübschesten

• breit (largo), breiter, am breitesten

Moduli di aumento con umlaut

• Gli aggettivi monosillabici con la vocale "a", "o" o "u" di solito ottengono un'umlaut nel comparativo e superlativo. Anche l'aggettivo "gesund" (sane) appartiene a questo gruppo, sebbene abbia due sillabe.
