Good vs. Well

  • Good = is an adjective that describes nouns

  • The dog is such a good boy when he gets his treat.

  • Well = is an adverb that describes verbs and even adjectives

  • I was feeling well after the chicken noodle soup.

  • Easier to mistake good for well than vice versa

Sometimes it is easy to mix up adjectives for adverbs

  • Bad = an adjective Badly = an adverb

  • Incorrect: I performed very bad on my History test.

  • Correct: I performed very badly on my History test.

  • Correct: My performance was bad on my History test.

  • Adjectives must go with nouns and adverbs must go with verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

Some adverbs like to not be near the verb they are describing

  • My family will be arriving at the house soon.

  • Always think about the questions: How, When, Where, In what way, To what extent

  • When will my family be arriving = soon

  • Often Tess, Hannah, and Marie will hang out together

  • To what extent will they hang out = often

  • Don't always assume the adverb will be right next to the verb.
