2

How to add signed numbers?

In adding signed numbers follow these rules:

  • Case 1: When adding like sign, get the sum and copy the common sign.

  • Case 2: When adding unlike sign, get the difference and copy the sign of the greater absolute value integer.

3

Let's perform Case 1:

Adding like sign

  • Example 1:

     2+5=72+5=7

  • Example 2:  (2)+(5)=7\left(-2\right)+\left(-5\right)=-7

  • Example 3:  (+11)+(+9)=+20\left(+11\right)+\left(+9\right)=+20

What is the answer if you will add the two integers

 (6)+(24)?\left(-6\right)+\left(-24\right)?

1

 18-18

2

 30-30

3

 3030

4

Let's perform Case 2:

Adding unlike sign

  • Example 1:

     (2)+5=3\left(-2\right)+5=3

  • Example 2:  (2)+(5)=3\left(2\right)+\left(-5\right)=-3

  • Example 3:  (11)+(9)=2\left(11\right)+\left(-9\right)=2

  • Example 4:  9+5=4-9+5=-4
