Periphrasis

  • "Periphrasis" is a Greek word meaning "talking around"

  • Roundabout way of talking about the future in a more immediate sense

  • dabit vs. daturus est - he will give vs. he is about to give

  • This reading deals with ACTIVE periphrastic, but there will also be PASSIVE periphrastics later on

What do they look like?

  • 2 word phrase

  • 1st word is future active participle

  • 2nd word is form of sum, esse

  • 2nd word can be any tense of sum, esse - translation changes depending on what tense is used

  • Pecuniam daturus/a sum. - I am about to give the money.

  • Pecuniam daturus/a fueram. - I had been about to give the money.

  • Caesar oppidum oppugnaturus est. Caesar is going to attack the town.

  • Caesar oppidum oppugnaturus erat. Caesar was going to attack the town.
