How to start writing the essay?

  • Easy! Think carefully of the topic / title of your choice (or given). Usually, at your level, you are given a title rather than topic.

  • Once you have a title in mind (set for you), then you have to think on how to elaborate on the topic.

  • How to elaborate the topic? Understand the title given, what is asked by the title? (Who, What, When, Why, Where)

3

Example

Title: Why can't we keep an elephant as pet?

  • What does the title asks? is it a who / why / when / where / what?

  • Based on the tile, it is very clear that the the title asks the reasons Why.

  • So, after you have identified which Wh-Question is asked, then you have to give 3 answers (for the 3 body paragraphs).

4

Title: Why can't we keep an elephant as pet?

  • It's big (Body Paragraph 1)

  • It's smelly (Body Paragraph 2)

  • It's expensive (Body paragraph 3)

5

Thesis statement (T/S)

  • The last sentence in your introduction paragraph.

  • It must only be ONLY 1 SENTENCE! (no matter how long it is).

  • Format : Transition word / phrases - title - 3 main ideas (MIs).

  • The main ideas are the ones that are going to be elaborated in the body paragraph, 1 main idea = 1 body paragraph.

6

Hence, the Thesis Statement (T/S) will be...

  • It must be a combination of your title + main idea. However please add proper keyword to show your writing supremacy.

  • The T/S serves as an introduction of the whole essay (it tells your reader what the body paragraphs will be about).

  • T/S - There are several reasons as to why an elephant cannot be kept as a pet as it is big, smelly and expensive.

7

Restatement of thesis statement

  • The first sentence in your conclusion paragraph. And it must be only 1 sentence.

  • Must RESTATE the T/S.

  • What is restate? to write again.

  • How do you write again? By changing the words and the sentence structure.

8

Thank you!

Difference

  • Thesis statement (T/S)

  • There are several reasons as to why an elephant cannot be kept as a pet as it is big, smelly and expensive.

  • Restatement of thesis statement (T/S)
