2

What are analogies?

An analogy is a comparison of two things to show their similarities.

Sometimes the things being compared are quite similar, but other times they could be very different. Nevertheless, an analogy explains one thing in terms of another to highlight the ways in which they are alike.

The subjects of the sets are different, but the relationships are the same.

3

What does as analogy look like?

Analogies are written in different ways. One way is to say: "High is to low as Hot is to cold." (These pairs are related because they are both antonyms/opposites."

You could also write it this way: high : low :: hot : cold.

4

You can even draw a bridge map to show an analogy!

5

How are they alike?

Analogies come in pairs. We need to decide how the first pair of words goes together, and then we are able to complete the second pair of words in the same way.

6

For Example: cat : dog :: doll : ball

Say to yourself, A cat and a dog are BOTH pets, just like a doll and a ball are BOTH toys. (They are in the same class.)

7

What we've covered so far:

  • Examining similarities (group names, picking pairs)

  • Same class (grouping items, pairing up)

  • Part/Whole relationships

8

There are MANY types of analogies!
