2

The Tigris and Euprates Rivers are the 2 most important physical features of the region known as MESOPOTAMIA

3

WHERE IS MESOPOTAMIA???? Mesopotamia lives between Asia Minor and the Persian Gulf. The region is part of a large area known as the FERTILE CRESCENT KNOWN which extends from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea.

4

The most important factor in Mesopotamia's farmland was controlling water flow. This was controlled through the process of IRRIGATION , which is a way of supplying water to an are of land.

5

To irrigate the land, they dug canals which are human-made waterways , to get the water from the Tigris and Euprates Rivers. This was a lot of work considering they didn't have machinery to do the job.

6

Since irrigation was so successful, farmers were able to grow more food than they needed. This is called a surplus.

7

More food meant not everyone needed to farm. people could have other jobs. people became crafters, religious leaders and government workers. This is known as Division of Labor. That just meant work was divided among many people.

8

Having all kinds of jobs, or division of labor meant that society could accomplish more. Large projects like construction, digging up irrigation systems and creating a government was now possible.

9

Mesopotamian settlements grew in size. Cities were developing. People traded goods and did business together. These settlements were the political, religious, cultural and economic centers of civilization.
