A fraction is an equal part of a whole. It is made up of fraction families

What is a fraction?

Fractions are made up of a numerator and a denominator.

The numerator is the top number. It tells us how many parts we have.


The denominator is the bottom number. It tells us how many parts the whole is divided into.

Some Fraction Families are:

Halves which is represented as 1/2, this means one out of two equal parts.

Fourths or Quarters which is represented as 1/4, this means one out of four equal parts.

Eighths which is represented as 1/8, this means one out of eight equal parts.


Remember: Each part is an equal part of the whole.
