The PeriodicTable

2
By the end of this session you will be able to....
Use the periodic table to identify elements based on their symbols.
Recognize how the periodic table can be used to predict the chemical properties of an element.
Locate noble gases, alkali metals, metals and non-metals on the periodic table, and describe their chemical properties.
3
4
Alkali Metals
The following elements all react explosively with water. These elements are shaded in green on periodic table, located in group 1.
Lithium
Sodium
Potassium
Rubidium
Cesium
Francium
5
6
Halogens
The following elements are all poisonous and explode when combined with other elements. These elements are shaded in red on the periodic table, located in group 17.
Fluorine
Chlorine
Bromine
Iodine
Astatine
7
8
Alkali Earth Metals
The Alkali Earth metals are less reactive than the Alkali metals, but more reactive than other metals. These elements are shaded in yellow on the periodic table, located in group 2.
Beryllium
Magnesium
Calcium
Strontium
Barium
Radium
9
10
Noble Gases
The following elements do not react when combined with other elements. These elements are shaded in purple on the period table.
Helium
Neon
Argon
Krypton
Xenon
Radon

Periodic Table Groups
Elements with similar chemical properties are lined up into groups (columns) on the periodic table. When elements have similar chemical properties it means they react the same way. For example: all Alkali metals explode when mixed with water.
The atomic mass and reactivity of an element increases as you get further down the periodic table.
Because the atomic mass increases, the size of the atoms also increase as they get further down the periodic table.
