2

Poll

What is Evidence?

a quote or piece of information that proves that the claim in your topic sentence is true

important information that your reader needs to know to understand your topic

an explanation of how a quote or piece of information supports the claim in your topic sentence

3

Poll

Which of the following is an example of Evidence?

a quote from a credible source

paraphrased information from a credible source

a picture

your opinion about a topic

4

Poll

True or False: You should have evidence to support the reason in your topic sentence.

True

False

5

What is Evidence?

  • Evidence is a quote or piece of information that proves that the claim (argument) in your topic sentence is true!

  • It is usually a quote or paraphrased (summarized) piece of information from a source that you trust!

  • It MUST support the reason in your topic sentence! Whatever comes after the word "because"!

6

Evidence as a Quote

  • When you use a quote as evidence, that means you are copying the information exactly as it appears in the source! It is NOT in your own words!

  • You have to cite your source, which means you have to show your reader where you got the information from!

7

Evidence as a Quote Example!

Topic sentence: Christopher Columbus was not a hero because he treated the Taino people cruelly.

Background Information: Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who is known for travelling to the Americas in 1492.

Evidence: Page 2 of Columbus Discovered the Taino People, Then Tried To Erase Them, an article by Bill Bigelow on Newsela.com, says, "Columbus sent more than 500 Taínos, including children, to Spain and kept the rest as slaves in the Caribbean."

8

Paraphrased Evidence!

  • When we "paraphrase" something, we are summarizing it, or putting it in our own words!

  • Paraphrased evidence cannot be copied and pasted!

  • You still have to cite your source, so your reader knows that you got the information from a trustworthy source!

9

Paraphrased Evidence Example

Topic sentence: Christopher Columbus was not a hero because he treated the Taino people cruelly.

Background Information: Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who is known for travelling to the Americas in 1492.

Evidence: Page 2 of Columbus Discovered the Taino People, Then Tried To Erase Them, an article by Bill Bigelow on Newsela.com, says that Columbus enslaved the Taino and sent over 500 back to Spain to be slaves. He even enslaved Taino children.

Notice how I put the quote from before in my own words? If I copied and pasted it and didn't put it in quotes, that would be stealing Bill Bigelow's work!

15

Pre-Assessment for Analysis!

The following question is a poll to see what you already know about Analysis!

16

Poll

What is Analysis? (You may choose more than 1)

the most important information that your reader needs to know to understand your topic

a disease

a sentence that explains what your evidence means

a sentence that explains how your evidence supports the claim in your topic sentence

17

What is Analysis?

  • Analysis is a sentence or two that shows your reader what your evidence means, AND how it supports your Topic Sentence!

  • It comes after your evidence and it tells your reader how your evidence proves you're right!

18

Analysis Example!

Analysis: This quote shows how Columbus enslaved the Tainos, even the children, and sent some to Spain. This demonstrates how Columbus treated the Tainos cruelly, because slavery was hard and brutal and he even forced children to do it.

19

Analysis Example for Paraphrased Evidence!

Analysis: This evidence shows how Columbus treated the Tainos cruelly because he made them and their children slaves, and slavery was cruel.

20

Analysis Example for Paraphrased Evidence!

  • Evidence: Page 2 of Columbus Discovered the Taino People, Then Tried To Erase Them, an article by Bill Bigelow on Newsela.com, says that Columbus enslaved the Taino and sent over 500 back to Spain to be slaves. He even enslaved Taino children.

Analysis: This evidence shows how Columbus treated the Tainos cruelly because he made them and their children slaves, and slavery was cruel.

  • Notice how this analysis is shorter than the one for a quote! That's because when we paraphrase, it's less effective, but by putting the quote in our own words, we have already explained it a little bit! So we can focus more on how it proves our argument is true!

2

This shows how Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was alive in the 1400's and it was hard to navigate without technology.

3

This quote shows that Europeans thought they could just sail west to reach Asia, but they didn't even know the Americas were in the way. That demonstrates how dangerous the trip was, and therefore, how Columbus was actually a hero.
