What is an adjective?

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun such as person, place, thing or idea.

The position of adjectives in a sentence.

In English language, it is very important to put the adjective in the correct place.

We place adjectives before the noun that they describe.

• A hot day

• A French city

• A red ball

• An international student

• Good students

• Canadian journalists

In sentences with the verb to be , we place the adjective after the verb.

• Messi is Argentinian

• Mexico city is big

• Students are hard-working

• People are nice

• The table is black

REMEMBER:

Adjectives in English only have one form.

We use this form with singular and plural.

We often have two adjectives in front of a noun:

• a handsome young man

• a big black car

• that lovely small dog

Some adjectives give a general opinion. We can use these adjectives to describe almost any noun:

• good - bad - lovely - excellent

• nice - important - nasty

• wonderful - beautiful - strange

• comfortable - delicious - tasty

We usually put an opinion adjective in front of a descriptive adjective:

• a nice red dress

• a silly old man

• those horrible plastic curtains

• that is an interesting English book
