“The Star Spangled Banner” was written by Frances Scott Key during the War of 1812.  He was aboard a British ship off the coast of Maryland watching a battle between the British and Americans at Fort McHenry.  This song became the national anthem in 1931 even though it was written to commemorate the War of 1812

Symbol of Uncle Sam

UncleSam is the symbol of the United States of America government.  He was created by the British during the War of 1812, and just like “Yankee Doodle,” the Americans decided to take this character and use it as our own.
