  • Entry: R.A.C.E.E.[A.C.E.E] and Enduring Issues

  • Focus: How can we use R.A.C.E to improve our Social Studies writing skills?

  • Date: 11/16/2020

3

Background Information

When we read a passage and answer a question, our goal is to convince the readers of our answer! One writing strategy that we use throughout middle school to write a good paragraph or essay is R.A.C.E.E[.A.C.E.E.]

R.A.C.E.E. is an ACRONYM. That means that every letter stands for a word or phrase.

4

R = RESTATE

  • R in RACEE stands for RESTATING the question. That means turning the question into a statement so people understand what you are answering.

  • QUESTION: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEATHER AND CLIMATE?

5

We Must ALSO ANSWER the question!

Question: (Restate and Answer) What is the difference between weather and climate?

Restate and Answer: What enduring issue was presented in this picture?

(Human Impact on Environment OR Environmental Impact on Humans)

11

(R) The enduring issue presented in the image is environmental impact.

(A) Specifically, it is environmental impact on humans. This is because the environment (area around us) is impacting a person's way of life.

12

After we answer our question. We must then PROVE it by CITING EVIDENCE. (Copying evidence to prove your answer EXACTLY from the text)

Slide image

13

After we cite evidence from the text we must EXPLAIN and ELABORATE.

Explain: What does the text mean?

Elaborate: How does it prove your answer?

NOW LET'S TRY THIS WITH A MEDIAL DOCUMENT

Slide image

14

Let's use R.A.C.E.E with Document #1

  • Do not forget to explain the enduring issue when answering the question.

  • Question: Based on the document, what is the problem or challenge that societies have faced across time?

  • When we say ACROSS TIME, we mean that this problem has existed since the beginning of time AND still exists today!

Restate and Answer: Based on the document, what is the problem or challenge that societies (people) have faced across time?

Click on the picture to read the document.

16

R. & A.

Based on the document, the problem societies have faced is environmental impact (the enduring issue). People had to migrate because of the Ice Age. They no longer had crops and they had to follow animals out in order to survive.

Elaborate and Explain!

E: This piece of evidence means....

E: This supports the claim (answer) because it shows...

20

  • E: This piece of evidence means that early humans had a difficult time surviving because of the frozen land.

  • Therefore, they had to find a new place to live because the environment affected them in a negative way. They were not able to hunt easily and there were no crops for them to eat.

  • Now you will try writing a perfect R.A.C.E.E. paragraph based on the next document.
