1. To make a French sentence negative, put ne in front of the verb and pas after it. Ne becomes n' before a word beginning with a vowel.

1. When a sentence contains a conjugated verb and an infinitive, put the ne and pas around the conjugated verb. Je n'aime pas dancer.

When you want to tell someone not to do something, put a ne in front of the command form and pas after it: Ne va pas chez Paul!

Let's make some sentences negative:

Je vais à la gare.

Je ne vais pas à la gare. (notice the ne... pas are placed around the verb)

Je ne vais pas regarder la télé (notice that the ne...pas hug the 1st verb.

J'aime la glace.

Je n'aime pas la glace. ( You need to drop the "e" off of the ne when the verb begins with a vowel.)

C'est une affiche.

Ce n'est pas une affiche. (add the "e" back onto the C and remove the "e" before the verb beginning with a vowel.)

Let's chat about responding to a question negatively.

We know how to respond if someone asks us about our likes or dislikes. Tu aimes la glace? Oui, J'aime la glace or non, je n'aime pas la glace. But what if someone asked a vous question or nous? Maybe even il or elle? How do you respond to that?

If someone asks you a question. You respond with I. In French tu → je

but:

vous → Nous (or Je)

nous  → nous

Elle va à l'hôtel. Non, Elle ne va pas à l'hôtel.

On va à la banque? Non, on ne va pas à la banque.

Vous allez à l'école? Non, Nous n'allons pas à l'école.

Nous allons au café? Non, nous n'allons pas au café

Ils vont à la campagne? Non, Ils ne vont pas à la campagne.
