Goal: Learn how to express what people like to do using the verb gustar.

​Use gustar to talk about what people like to do.

​Here's how: Use phrases like me gusta + infinitive.

​

​Me gusta dibujar. I like to draw

​Te gusta dibujar. You like to draw. (Familiar).

​Le gusta dibujar. You (usted) like to draw. He/she likes to draw.

​Nos gusta dibujar. We like to draw.

​Os gusta dibujar. You (familiar plural) like to draw. Spain only!

​Les gusta dibujar. You all like to draw. They like to draw.

​When you want to really emphasize or identify the person that you are talking about add a + noun/pronoun.

​A Martha le gusta leer. Martha likes to read.

​ or

​A ella le gusta leer. She likes to read.

​Gustar does not literally mean "to like", but rather to be pleasing.

​Me gusta = it is pleasing to me.

​

​Use indirect object pronouns me, te, le, nos, os, and les to indicate whom an activity is pleasing. Place the indirect object pronoun immediately before the conjugated form of gustar. To say that someone does not like something, no is used directly before the indirect object pronoun.

​What are infinitives?

​Infinitives are the basic form of a verb. All infinitives in the basic form will end in -AR, -ER, or -IR.

​They always have "to" in front of them.

​

​To sleep = dormir

​To swim = nadar

​To read = leer

​To walk = caminar

​To talk = hablar

​To run = correr

​To study = estudiar
