we will discover more information about the Navajos and their history so that they can better understand the significance of the events in the life of Kii Yázhí.

Code Talker is based on actual events and that Joseph Bruchac included an Author’s Note at the end of the novel to explain some of the facts behind those events in more detail.

Annotating means
someone usually highlights or underlines key pieces of text and making notes in the margins of the text.

As students listen to me read aloud the portion of the Author’s Note devoted to the Navajos, you should follow along, annotating the text as follows:
* to mark important ideas about the Navajos’ history or culture.
! to note interesting details.
? to show places in the text where they have questions, wonders, or confusion.

What I learned was
When the Spanish came to the SouthWest it upset and disrupted the peace and balance of the Navajo people.
The Spanish called it raiding when the Navajo people refused to be enslaved.
The Navajo thought the US were setting them free but they sent other people to enslave them.
