Finding x & y intercepts

I can use x- and y-intercepts to graph lines.

I can find x- and y-intercepts and interpret their meanings in real-world situations.

The y-intercept is the y-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis.

The x-coordinate of this point is always 0.

The x-intercept is the x-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x-axis.

The y-coordinate of this point is always 0.

The y-intercept is -120. It is the coordinate (0,-120)

The x-intercept is 4. It is the coordinate (4,0)

When looking at a graph, find where the line crosses each axis.

For this graph, the line crosses at (-2,0) and at (0,1)

Intercepts can be written as coordinates. (x,y)

Therefore it's x-intercept is -2 and it's y-intercept is 1.

This is often written

x-int = -2 and y-int = 1

Intercepts can also be written as a single number.

21

Finding x & y intercepts from an equation and using them to create a linear graph.

Since each intercept has a ZERO as part of its coordinate,we can use ZEROS to calculate the intercepts.

Substitute 0 in for the x-value and solve to find the y-intercept. (0,-5)

Substitute 0 in for the y-value and solve to find the x-interecpt. (2,0)

These two points can be graphed and the line for this equation drawn through them.
