Multiplication with Carrying

Step-by-step

We begin working this problem in the ones place as usual.

 $8\times2=16$  

• 2 digits cannot be written in the ones place. In 16 there are 6 ones and 1 ten.

• We write the 6 in the ones place and carry the 1 to the tens place.

• Write a plus sign in front of the one to remind is to add the carried number instead of multiplying it.

Next we need to multiply the tens place

 $2\times1$  

 $2\times1=2$  

• We multiply  $2\times1$  to get 2.

• We must then add our carry digit, in this case our 1.  $2+1=3$  

• Now we write the 3 in the tens place of our product.

Time to check our work

We can check a multiplication problem by using addition.
