2

WHERE DOES PHOTOSYNTHESIS HAPPEN?

  • Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplast

  • Contain a substance called chlorophyll

  • Chlorophyll reflects green light giving plants their green color

Four Steps

  • Step 1: absorption of light by chlorophylls , used to break water (H20) -->(4H+ and 4 e- and O2)

  • Step 2: The electron transport leading to the reduction of NADP+ to NADPH

  • Step 3: Generation of ATP

  • Step 4: Conversion of CO2 into carbohydrates (sugar) (Calvin Cycle or Carbon Fixation)

5

Carbon fixation

  • A CO2 molecule combines with a five-carbon acceptor molecule, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). This step makes a six-carbon compound that splits into two molecules of a three-carbon compound, 3-phosphoglyceric acid (3-PGA). This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme RuBP carboxylase/oxygenase, or rubisco

  • End results is Sugar
