1
Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water (and light ) ———> glucose and oxygen
2
WHERE DOES PHOTOSYNTHESIS HAPPEN?
Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplast
Contain a substance called chlorophyll
Chlorophyll reflects green light giving plants their green color
3
4
Four Steps
Step 1: absorption of light by chlorophylls , used to break water (H20) -->(4H+ and 4 e- and O2)
Step 2: The electron transport leading to the reduction of NADP+ to NADPH
Step 3: Generation of ATP
Step 4: Conversion of CO2 into carbohydrates (sugar) (Calvin Cycle or Carbon Fixation)
5
Carbon fixation
A CO2 molecule combines with a five-carbon acceptor molecule, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). This step makes a six-carbon compound that splits into two molecules of a three-carbon compound, 3-phosphoglyceric acid (3-PGA). This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme RuBP carboxylase/oxygenase, or rubisco
End results is Sugar
