It is used to express an imaginary situation which began in the past but the result "happens" in the present. (everything is imaginary... unreal past, unreal present)

  • Both = imaginary situation

  • 3rd conditional e.g. If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam

PERFECT MODALS

could have / might have / would have / should have

  • Something possible in the past but didn't happen. It's good you didn't invest all your money you could / might / should have lost everything

  • could and might = irritation or criticism. I was expecting you to come you could / might have told me you were not coming!

  • should = criticize what other have or haven't done. You shouldn't have made that decision yourself.
