Multiplication & Division 6s & 7s
Objective: Use the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide using units of 6 and 7.
2
Label the tape diagrams. Then, fill in the blanks below to make the statement true.
3
We need to find out what 6 x 6 = ?
4
I don't know my 6s that well but I know my 5s and 1s.
So I am going to break one of my 6s down in 5 and 1 because I know that
5 + 1 = 6.
5
They told me my 5 goes over here on the left
and I can see that there are 5 empty boxes too on the left side of the dotted line.
Now I need to figure out where my 1 will go.
6
If my 5 is on the left side of the dotted line, than that means my 1 goes on the right side of the dotted line.
7
Now I need to figure out what 5 x 6 = ?
I can count by 5s or I can add up 6 five times.
We are going to add 6 five times because that is what our problem wants us to do.
8
9
Now we have figured out the left side of the dotted line and know that 5 x 6 = 30
10
We need to do the other side too.
11
What do you think I am going to put in this box?
Are we counting by 1s or 6s?
12
So 1 x 6 = ?
13
14
You should now have problem #1a filled out like this so far.
But we are not done...

25
26
Well, we should know that 5 x 6 = 30 because we just found that out in problem 1a.
27
28
What do I do with the 30 and 12?

Division 54 ÷ 6
32
We need to find two numbers that make 54 but can also be divisible by 6.
33
They gave us 30 and 24. Does 30 + 24 = 54??
34
If we were not sure, we could look at our multiplication facts of 6 and find two numbers that make 54.
35
36
Can anyone tell me what 24 ÷ 6 = ?
