Multiple Select
According to Governor Walz, we DID keep the curve down. What does that mean? Click all that apply.
"Cases going off the charts" started in the fall (Oct-Nov). Before that, the case numbers remained lower than those of other states.
Minnesota kept cases lower and saved lives from March to September.

Governor Walz said: "The ground is shifting under our feet each day."
What does this idiom mean. Click all that apply.
"X is shifting beneath our feet" means that X is changing drastically, right now.
Like the photo, everything is changing so fast, we have to MOVE NOW to stay standing.
It means huge changes will have a great effect on us all.

What is the time shown in this image?
2 and a half weeks
15-18 days
Oh, that's awful. So many new infections so fast in Minnesota
9
Multiple Select
"[COVID cases] will continue to accelerate to ... "
accelerate means
increase in amount or extent; COVID cases will increase faster and faster and faster
to 400,000 and 500,000
We will get a half a million cases IN MINNESOTA if we don't do something.

COVID surge. What does surge mean?
See the next slide for an example of a surge of people. This surge at the Chicago airport happened in March when President Trump said Americans had a limited time to get home from Europe. Our COVID in the USA is from Europe, not China.
Click all of these boxes.

Multiple Select
Governor Walz said surge of COVID cases in Minnesota follows a predictable timeline, "like clockwork".
1.People get the virus (community spread now; nobody knows where they got it).
2.After two or three weeks, hospitalizations (people so sick with the virus that they go to the hospital).
3.After that people are moved into the ICU (intensive care unit) ...
4.and then death. This is the sequence. Click all of these.
14
Multiple Select
Why does the COVID surge matter? Click all that apply.
too many hospital workers are sick
too many people who work in nursing homes are sick (a lot of Como students work in nursing homes) = old people places
too many police and firefighters are sick
out state needs to do something to stop the horrible community spread
15
Multiple Select
"With the spread we have now, it's one or two hundred people in the hospital, it's one or two thousand." What happens when we follow the data?
"You can extrapolate that we will run out of bed space."
Extrapolate means that if we follow the data, with so many COVID-infected Minnesotans, there will NOT be enough hospital or ICU beds for everybody who needs them.
16
Multiple Select
Healthcare workers are getting sick. And their not getting sick at work. They are getting sick in their communities. Click the boxes that talk about community spread.
Community spread means we don't know who has the virus, so we don't know where people are getting it.
Many people are asymptomatic; meaning they have COVID but they don't have any symptoms.
Many people out in the community do NOT know they have COVID and they are spreading it.
If too many healthcare workers get sick out in the community, we are in REAL trouble.
17
Multiple Select
"Children and families are bearing the burden of the surge." What does this mean?
"bearing the burden" means that children and families are having the most problems during this surge
"Families are struggling to find an impossible balance."
