What is preterite tense?

  • The preterite tense in Spanish tells what happened at a particular moment in the past.

  • For example, the day you were born is a particular moment in the past. You cannot be born again.

  • Another example, your first day of school ever. This is a particular moment in time for you that cannot be redone.

  • Another example would be the day you got your driver's license for the very first time and pass the test. Unless you do something pretty reckless, you won't need to take the test over again.

The preterite tense in Spanish tells what happened at a particular moment in the past.

For example, the day you were born is a particular moment in the past. You cannot be born again.

Preterite tense identifiers

  • Because preterite tense is for a one time thing or particular moment in time, there are identifiers for that particular time.

  • Por ejemplo, ayer yo visité una amiga.

  • For example, yesterday I visited a friend. As far as we know, I visited that friend one time at that particular time. This is when we use preterite tense.
