You must learnt this!!

  • Distance = Speed x Time

  • Speed = Distance / Time

  • Time = Distance / Speed

46

UNITS ARE IMPORTANT

  • Distance is measure in metres (m

  • Time is measured in seconds (s)

  • Speed is measured in metres per second (m/s)

  • ALWAYS USE THESE UNITS UNLESS THE QUESTION TELLS YOU OTHERWISE

Speed, distance and time are also used here. Sonar is used to measure the depth of oceans.

  • Think about the problem on the next slide

60

media

61

Solving the problem.

  • the Speed of Ultrasound in water 1530 m/s

  • The signal takes 14.4 seconds to leave the ship and for it to return to the ships receiver

  • How deep is that ocean?

62

Solving the problem

The Ultrasound signal leaves the ship, hits the ocean floor and reflects back up to the ship.

That is the total distance the ultrasound wave travelled. But is it the distance from the ship to the bed of the Ocean?

media

63

Solving the problem.

  • Distance = Speed x Time

  • Distance = 1530 (m/s) x 14.4 (s)

  • = 22,032 metres (m)

  • BUT! This is the distance from the ship to the bed of the ocean and back up to the ship again.

  • Distance = 22,032 / 2

  • Distance = 11,016 m
