The concept of adaptive learning surfaces in the ‘70s with the emergence of intelligent tuition, created through artificial intelligence (AI) studies. It relies on the assumption that the intelligent system created will be able to adapt itself to the students’ learning process, thus resulting in a better and more effective learning experience. 

According to Brusilovsky and Peylo (2003), adaptive learning is an educational method that uses, as a strategy to promote interactions of the teaching and learning process consistent with each student’s specific needs, technological means in which the teaching content is broadcasted and adapted according to the student’s learning needs, based on responses to the exercises, assignments, and experiences presented.

Furthermore, adaptive systems are those seeking to be different for different students, considering the information accumulated in individual models in which the participants interaction. The main adaptive technologies used by web and hypermedia systems are: (1) adaptive content selection which takes place when the use searches for information and the system adaptably filters and gives priority to the most important items in the search; and (2) adaptive browsing which takes place when the system controls the URLs while the user browses.
