What are Gerunds?

A gerund is a noun what has the form verb + ing.

Gerunds can be used ......

• as the subject of a sentence. Swimming is a great sport.

• as an object of certain verbs and expressions (Full list on page 333 in grammar book). You must finish cleaning before you go out.

• after prepositions. She is interested in going to college.

We can add a second subject to a sentence with a gerund.

• Tom hates delaying soccer practice.

• Tom hates the coach delaying soccer practice.
