Separable Phrasal Verbs

i) The second part of phrasal verbs can go after or before the object.

ii) When the object is a pronoun, the second part of must go after it.

  • Example of separable phrasal verbs which go before or after an object.

  • Please switch on the kettle.

  • Please switch the kettle on.

  • Example of separable phrasal ;when the object is a pronoun

  • Tell him to switch it on

Phrasal Verbs

behave exactly the same way as ordinary verbs.

They can be transitive (Jane put on her pullover.)

They can be intransitive (Jacky ran away.)

They can have literal meanings( We went down using the lift.)

They can have figurative meanings ( The price of petrol has gone down.)
