2

Learning Outcome:

At the end of the course, students should be able to differentiate between “Innovation” and “Invention”

3

DEFINITION OF INVENTION

Can be defined as the creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time.

4

SIGNIFICANCE OF INVENTION

5

Inventions are a proof of the credibility of scientific knowledge.

Without inventions science and existing theories will be rendered unfruitful. The society would not be able to reap the benefits of such theories.

6

Inventions have unexpected results.

Inventions are described as taking a jump into what is unknown. It possesses a high risk of having unknown effects substantial results because no one can correctly forecast the outcome.

7

Invention is the building block for innovation.

Innovation is often referred to as putting an invention to a use. For example, the discovery of Electric Dynamo by Michael Faraday highlighted the practical use of electricity which was invented and known even before.

8

Example for Invention

9

Nikola Tesla

He was an eccentric inventor and an exceptional scientist who made major inventions like alternating current, remote control, neon lamps, 3-phase power and induction motor and many more which are used today in day-to-day life.

10

Alexander Graham Bell

Inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone.

He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885

11

Wilbur and Orville Wright

American inventors and pioneers of aviation. In 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first powered, sustained and controlled airplane flight; they surpassed their own milestone two years later when they built and flew the first fully practical airplane.

12

DEFINITION OF INNOVATION

Innovation can be described as a value addition to a product line, device or ideology by altering their basics for delivering greater value to the customer and survive in a persistently innovating environment.

13

SIGNIFICANCE OF INNOVATION

14

Innovation is a major contributor to the growth of a company

Rapidly innovating organizations have an edge in terms of their growth. Even a smaller scale company can grow by leaps and bounds if it is advancing its products and services as per the needs of its customers.

15

Example for Innovation

16

Steve Jobs

When Steve Jobs returned in 1997, he lead Apple to apogee of success through remarkable innovations like iPhone, iPad and many other innovations.

17

Steve Sasson

In 1975, Kodak engineer Steve Sasson created the first-ever digital camera. It was built using parts of kits and leftovers around the Kodak factory, and an early CCD image sensor from Fairchild in 1974. The camera was about the size of a breadbox and it took 23 seconds to capture a single image.

Why do we need to invent or innovate?

22

NOKIA CASE

Nokia has been a respectable company. They didn’t do anything wrong in their business, however, the world changed too fast. Their opponents were too powerful. They missed out on learning, they missed out on changing, and thus they lost the opportunity at hand to make it big. Not only did they miss the opportunity to earn big money, they lost their chance of survival.

23

NOKIA CEO ENDED HIS SPEECH SAYING THIS

“WE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG, BUT SOMEHOW, WE LOST”.

The message of this story is, if you don’t change, you shall be removed from the competition. It’s not wrong if you don’t want to learn new things. However, if your thoughts and mindset cannot catch up with time, you will be eliminated.

24

Five steps to invention or innovation

25

Step 1 – Identification of the problem

Recognizing an unsolved problem or one with an unsatisfactory current solution and determining to solve it.

26

Step 2 – Exploration

Collecting information to help understand the problem better and produce initial solutions.

27

Step 3 – Incubation

Periods of relaxation allow subconscious thought.

28

Step 4 – Act of insight

A solution suddenly appears by a mental act that goes beyond the act of skill normally expected of a trained professional in that field.

29

Step 5 – Critical revision

The solution is fully explored, tested and revised into a workable solution, possibly involving further acts of insight.
