1580's - England tries to colonize North America
Sir Walter Raleigh got permission from the Queen to organize the settlement
He wanted to set up military bases and look for treasure.
Spain was England's enemy at the time. Both were out for land.

The Queen gave Raleigh a "charter" (This is an official permission slip)
In 1585 a small group tried to colonize Roanoke.
They could not farm and relied heavily on trade with the natives
The Natives got sick of trading for nothing.
When the natives stopped trade, the English attacked.
This led to fighting and the colonists returned back to England in 1586.

In 1587, John White took 118 men, women, and children back to Roanoke
The new colony was unprepared and could not grow food in the sandy soil.
John White went back to England to get supplies.
The Queen needed his ship to fight Spain.
White didn't return for 3 years. When he did the colony was gone
Only clue was "CROATOAN" carved in a tree

His bros said the land was nice with lots of resources and, oh yeah, Native Americans. But they said they're cool so....
They heard that there was gold further inland
1585 all these soldiers rolled up on Roanoke
They went exploring and suggested they move in towards the Chesapeake bay
Ship returned in 1586 and they got outta there mad fast. They had been fighting with the natives
Went straight home and blamed the weather.

War is long and he doesn't get back for 3 years.
When he does get back, they are all gone. poof. vanished
Only clue is the word CROATOAN carved in a tree
Another storm sends white back to England. No search party for them.
