Affirmative / Negative Words Part 1

Alguien - Someone/Somebody/Anyone - Refers to a general idea of a person/Can be the subject or object of the sentence
Algo - Something/Anything - Refers to a general idea of a thing/concept/Can be the subject or object of the sentence
Siempre - Always
También - Also/Too

Nadie - No one/Nobody - Refers to a general idea of a person /Can be the subject or object of the sentence
Nada - Nothing/Not at all - Refers to a general idea of a thing/concept /Can be the subject or object of the sentence; (Not at all - for emphasis)
Nunca - Never
Tampoco - Neither/either

Negative Words - Reminders

• Use a negative word in a negative sentence only.

• To make a sentence negative, use "no" before the verb

• Often times, the negative word can also go before the verb to make the sentence negative.

• In English, we don't use double negatives; in Spanish often times we must use a double negative.

• You can't have a plural of nothing. Therefore, when referring to the negative of algunos and algunas, you have to make your noun and negative word, singular.

• Only in cases where the noun cannot be made singular are you allowed to use the plural form ningunos/ningunas (tijeras/ pantalones/materiales)

Affirmative / Negative Words Part 1 (EXAMPLES)

+ Alguien: Yo conozco a alguien importante. / Alguien necesita la ayuda de la profesora.

- Nadie: Yo no conozco a nadie importante. / Nadie necesita la ayuda de la profesora.

+ Algo: La niña quiere algo de la tienda. / A mí me molesta algo en el zapato.

- Nada: La niña no quiere nada de la tienda. / A mí no me molesta nada en el zapato.

+ Siempre: Yo siempre hago la tarea de español a tiempo. / La comida de mi mamá siempre es deliciosa.

- Nunca: Yo nunca hago la tarea de español a tiempo. / Yo no hago la tarea de español a tiempo nunca. / La comida de mi mamá nunca es grasosa.

+ También: A mí me gusta el café. Me gusta el té caliente también. / Yo practico al fútbol todos los domingos y mis hermanos también.

- Tampoco: A mí no me gusta el café. No me gusta el té caliente tampoco. / Yo no practico al fútbol todos los domingos y mis hermanos tampoco.

Affirmative / Negative Words Part 2

+ algún / - ningún are used when referring to a masculine, singular noun that is stated in the sentence.

+ alguno / - ninguno are used when referring to a masculine, singular noun that is implied (not stated in the sentence).

+ alguna / - ninguna are used when referring to a feminine, singular noun. It can be either stated in the sentence or implied.

+ algunos is used when referring to a masculine, plural noun. It can be either stated in the sentence or implied.

+ algunas is used when referring to a feminine, plural noun. It can be either stated in the sentence or implied.

- ningunos/ningunas can only be used with a noun that cannot be made singular (such as with pantalones, tijeras, materiales).

Affirmative / Negative Words Part 2 - Notes

• These affirmative / negative words refer to a specific noun

• These affirmative words all mean SOME / ANY

• These affirmative words need to agree with the noun it is referencing whether that noun is implied or stated in the sentence

• Algún / Ningún are used when the noun is masculine, singular, AND STATED in the sentence

• Alguno / Ninguno are used when the noun is masculine, singular, AND IMPLIED

• These negative words all mean NO / NONE / NOT ANY

• You cannot have a plural of nothing so you can't use NINGUNOS / NINGUNAS unless the noun which it is referencing has no singular form (Ex. los pantalones, las tijeras, los materiales)

Sí, tengo alguno en la casa. or

No, no tengo ninguno. or

Sí, conozco a alguna. or

Sí, conozco a alguna chica colombiana. or

No, no conozco a ninguna. or
