Le comparatif, et les verbes devoir et mettre

2
The Comparative
The comparative is used to compare people and things using adjectives
In English we form it by putter -er on an adjective :
tallER shortER funniER
Example: Coraline is shorter than Mme Chuck
Example: French students are smarter than other students.
In English there are some irregulars: good = better fun = more fun bad = worse

4
Le comparatif
To make the comparative in French:
noun1 + is/are + more/less/as + adjective + than + noun2
noun1 + est/sont + plus/moins/aussi + adjectif + que + nous2
It’s easier than algebra!
Coraline est plus courte que Mme Chuck
Les élèves de français sont plus intelligents que les autres élèves

drôle
amusant
facile/difficile
intéressant
sympa
court/long
grand/petit
rapide/lent
6
Irregulars
Just like there are irregulars in English, there are in French too!
There are two in French: bon (good) et mauvais (bad)
Bon turns into meilleur
Mauvais turns into pire
When using them in a sentence you don't need the plus/moins/aussi
Example: Un stylo est mieux qu'un crayon.
Example: Le chocolat blanc est pire que le chocolat noir.
7
Notes!
The adjective MUST agree with the first noun
Don't forget the verb of the sentence: est = is, sont = are
If you are not using a proper noun, you need articles
Que becomes qu' in front of a vowel
8
Devoir
to have to (must)
9
Devoir
je dois _____ nous devons
tu dois _____ vous devez
il doit _____ ils doivent
10
Using devoir
Devoir is a 'helper verb', meaning that it is not the main action of the sentence.
Your main verb (what you have to do) will be in the infinitive
Example: Je dois étudier = I have to study
